i am looking for some tips on using a gopro for making videos. i just bought one and need suggestions on an external mic as i want decent quality audio on my videos. I have the hero 4 silver.
If you want good sound quality, I suggest recording it separately on a portable device such as a Tascam - or just use the sound track from one of your other cameras placed further away from the mess! Syncing sound in digital linear editing is really easy these days as you don't get the problems of motors gaining or losing speed as with analogue equipment (but an extra job, obviously). Sync the sound on all sequences before you start cutting it up, though (or it's a real ball-ache). I even use a traditional clapperboard as a sync reference before each continuous capture.
Sound quality on the GoPro's is pretty dire to be honest. We use them a fair bit but use the sound from another camera and sync it all up as Trouso said. We've got the zoom H4N recorder as well which is great as you can use 2 external mics recorded on separate tracks as well as the 2 onboard mics. Syncing up is not that hard at all really, depending what software you are using. We use FCPX and have never really had any problems syncing up 2 or 3 cameras and external audio. Personally, although the GoPro's are fantastic cameras, there are much better all round cameras for what we shoot. We changed to a Panasonic Lumix FT5 for our Songkran Wetlook shoots this year and were very impressed with quality of sound and images.
